20 Customer Feedback Survey Questions (with Examples)
Write customer feedback surveys people actually finish. 20 ready-to-use questions for onboarding, product, support, pricing and feature requests, plus the questions to avoid.
TL;DR
Good survey questions are short, specific and single-barreled. Ask about a recent moment, not a vague opinion. Use 3 to 5 questions max per survey, mix rating scales with one open question, and always tell customers what you changed because of their answers.

What makes a good customer feedback survey question?
A good survey question is short, specific and about one thing only. "How easy was it to invite your teammates yesterday?" beats "How do you like our product?" because it anchors the customer to a real moment they can rate accurately. Keep surveys to three to five questions, put the rating scale first, and end with exactly one open question. Every question you add past that point costs completion rate, and a 40-question survey does not give you 40 answers, it gives you zero.

Onboarding and first impression
- "How easy was it to get started?" (1 to 5 scale)
- "What did you find confusing in your first session?"
- "What almost made you give up during setup?"
- "How long did it take you to reach your first success?"
Product and features 5. "How often do you use [feature]?" 6. "Which feature would you be sad to lose?" 7. "What is the one thing we should build next?" 8. "Which problem did you hope our product would solve that it does not yet?"
Support and service 9. "How would you rate your last support interaction?" 10. "Did we solve your problem completely?" 11. "How quickly did we respond?" 12. "What should our support team start doing?"
Pricing and value 13. "How fair is our pricing for the value you get?" 14. "What would make our paid plan a no-brainer for you?" 15. "Which feature would you pay extra for?" 16. "If you had to cut our product from your budget, what would you miss most?"
Relationship and loyalty 17. "How likely are you to recommend us?" (the NPS question) 18. "What is the main reason for that score?" 19. "What could we do to earn a 10 from you?" 20. "What is the biggest risk of you switching to a competitor?"
Which survey questions should you never ask?
Skip questions you already have data for, such as age and company size when your billing system knows them. Skip double-barreled questions ("Is our app fast and reliable?") because one answer cannot cover two topics. Skip hypotheticals ("Would you pay for X?") unless you plan to validate with a real pricing test. And never ask "Are you satisfied?" without a follow-up, because a 4 out of 5 tells you nothing about what to change.
How do you turn survey answers into action?
Route every answer somewhere it can become work. Feature requests go to your voting board, complaints go to a bug or UX list, and praise goes to marketing (with permission). Then close the loop: publish a short "you asked, we shipped" note after each survey round. Customers forgive imperfection. They do not forgive answering questions into a void.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Rating scale or open text? Use a 1 to 5 or 0 to 10 scale for measurement and one open question for context. Open-only surveys are impossible to trend.
- How do you get a higher response rate? Ask at the right moment, promise a specific follow-up ("we share results every month"), keep it under two minutes and thank respondents publicly.
- Should you survey every customer? Sample instead of spam. A random 20 percent sample monthly gives a healthier signal than surveying everyone quarterly, because the data stays fresh.
- What is the best time to send an email survey? Within an hour of the relevant moment for support and onboarding, and 24 to 48 hours after a product milestone for everything else.
- What if responses are all positive? Suspect selection bias. Happy customers answer; angry ones churn silently. Follow up with churned accounts and read support logs, not only the survey.
